It’s Bold. It’s New: Introducing WestQuest
It is new; it is bold; it is necessary.
What is it?
It is the Westside School’s challenging outdoor program, that will begin in Grade 5 and continue to Grade 12. It is designed to enable students to know themselves: to discover their potential, to meet and overcome challenges, to respect the environment, to value teamwork, to make sound decisions, to increase self-esteem, and to grow in confidence.
We know that a strong self-concept, appropriately developed, leads to superior performance in learning and, hence, better marks.
Discovery Education
WestQuest will be a mandatory program, operating in dedicated time slots, and so a valuable shared, bonding experience for all. Its activities will be many and varied, including, as age-appropriate, such things as camping, hiking, cycling, kayaking, climbing, canoeing, caving, tracking, protecting nature, studying natural phenomena, learning survival skills of various types, such as first aid, and supporting ecologically vital ventures. Its motto will be ‘Discovery without Danger’ and it will be led supported by experts in the various activities.
Success in some of the activities will lead to certification by external bodies and/or contribute to PE marks and Graduation credits, while meeting and overcoming the challenges in them all will develop a strong self-concept in each student.
We hope the COVID-19 pandemic will be gone, allowing us to begin the program in the 2021/22 school year.
